IDEXX launches USDA-approved Swine Influenza Virus Ab Test, helping laboratories screen more confidently and conveniently

WESTBROOK, Maine, June 13, 2014—IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDXX), today announced U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval of the company’s Swine Influenza Virus Ab Test. The new enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detects antibodies to all influenza type A viruses, giving laboratories a single tool to confidently screen for and monitor swine influenza.

In addition to its broad detection capabilities, the IDEXX Swine Influenza Virus Ab Test demonstrates high sensitivity, accurately detecting antibodies to nucleoprotein (NP) of swine influenza virus within 14 days of initial infection. “Influenza virus is always changing, which is why we developed one test that screens for multiple swine subtypes,” said Olivier te Boekhorst, Vice President and General Manager, IDEXX Livestock, Poultry and Dairy. “Knowing that the test is manufactured under the stringent quality control systems of IDEXX and is USDA approved, laboratories and their swine industry customers can be confident in the results of this broad screen.”

Swine influenza is a significant respiratory disease that causes high morbidity and can lead to reproductive failure in sows. The virus presents with coughing, dyspnea and fever, and can be endemic in contemporary swine herds. In addition, when influenza occurs concurrently with other swine respiratory pathogens, the clinical and economic impact is worse. Timely detection is important for producers who need to document the health of animals before export or sale, and/or monitor herds for exposure to the disease. Because the IDEXX Swine Influenza Virus Ab Test uses a strip-plate rather than a solid-plate format, laboratories can run as few or as many tests as needed. This not only provides flexibility and convenience, but increases laboratory efficiency and decreases waste.

The IDEXX Swine Influenza Virus Ab Test is now available in the United States, Canada and Mexico. For more information on the IDEXX Swine Influenza Virus Ab Test, contact Paulette Barter, U.S. Sales Manager, IDEXX Livestock, Poultry and Dairy, at 1-207-556-8680.
