Hypodermosis/Hypoderma

Hypodermosis, or warble fly, is a subcutaneous myiasis caused by the larvae of two insects of the order Diptera: Hypoderma lineatum (HL) and Hypoderma bovis (HB).

Long considered only mildly pathogenic, hypodermosis is now considered a major parasitic disease due to the pernicious effects of larvae migration. In addition to damaging hides, the migrating fly larvae trigger serious allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, and reduce milk and meat production.

Eradication depends upon ELISA testing to detect infection early, at the L1 larval stage, when systemic treatment can break the infestation cycle. In addition to determining the initial degree of infestation, this testing measures the residual foci of hypodermosis after treatment. IDEXX offers two testing options—one for use with serum and one for milk.

IDEXX Hypodermosis Milk Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The IDEXX Hypodermosis Milk Ab Test detects the specific antibodies against the L1 antigens in milk. It is based on the use of plates coated with purified extract of L1 larvae of Hypoderma lineatum. It allows for analyzing individual or pools of milks and detects the French standard "Hypodermose 2000" in a 1:512 dilution in negative milk samples. This detection limit corresponds to the recommendations elaborated by a French working group (consisting of the DGAL, SIMV, ADILVA and FNGDSB) concerning a voluntary control of hypodermosis diagnostics.

IDEXX Hypodermosis Serum Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The IDEXX Hypodermosis Serum Ab Test analyzes individual or pools of milk sera and detects the French standard "Hypodermose 2000" in a 1:512 dilution in negative serum. This detection limit corresponds to the recommendations elaborated by a French working group (consisting of the DGAL, SIMV, ADILVA and FNGDSB) concerning a voluntary control of hypodermosis diagnostics.
