Compare the imaging technologies behind IDEXX Digital Imaging systems

How often do you take x-rays? How quickly do you need to view images? Your answers will help you determine the imaging technology that’s right for your practice.

Computed Radiography

  • Images are generated with a cassette containing a flexible screen coated with a photostimulable phosphor.
  • Lignt energy is absorbed by phosphor screen, which holds it as a latent image.
  • Cassette is placed in scanner; image is digitized and sent to computer.
  • Phosphor screen is automatically erased.

Computed radiography work flow—ideal for practices transitioning to digital from film

  1. Position the animal as needed for capturing desired anatomy.
  2. Capture image on cassette.
  3. Remove cassette from Bucky tray/table area.
  4. Insert cassette into scanner.
  5. Image populates on monitor in under 60 seconds.

Used in the IDEXX I-Vision CR™ Digital Imaging System.

Flat-panel Detector
Direct-Capture (DR) Technology

  • Images are generated with an amorphous selenium plate that absorbs the x-ray directly.
  • Digital information is sent from plate directly to computer.

Direct-capture work flow—ideal for fast-paced small-animal and equine practices

  1. Position the animal as needed—or in the case of equine patients, the plate—for capturing desired anatomy.
  2. Capture image using plate.
  3. Image appears on monitor in under 5 seconds on the IDEXX EquiView® Digital Imaging System

Used in the IDEXX EquiView Digital Imaging system.

Capture, view, store and share radiographs with veterinary-specific IDEXX-PACS Imaging Software

The value of a digital image depends on the tools you capture and manage it with. That's the inspiration behind our exclusive IDEXX-PACS (picture archiving and communication system) Imaging Software.

Veterinary-specific software

We've designed IDEXX-PACS software specifically for veterinary imaging with independent, board-certified veterinary radiologists. It's DICOM®-conformant and meets the latest American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) guidelines for imaging.

Image clarity and confidence

To capture clearer images faster, IDEXX-PACS comes with state-of-the-art ClearCapture Dx® Image Processing Software. We've carefully configured the processing parameters in the ClearCapture Dx software for veterinary ranges. As a result, it delivers enhanced anatomic structure definition, so you can view fine bone and soft tissue detail more easily—even in larger dogs.

Faster diagnoses

To help you provide faster, more accurate diagnoses, IDEXX-PACS software puts user-friendly features at your fingertips:

  • Advanced enhancement and annotation tools (including TPLO annotations) to improve how you view, annotate and manage radiographs
  • Veterinary-specific exams and image processing for more confident decisions
  • Dental image viewing modes to view images in their native hanging format and in context with a variety of templates.
  • Radiology log to update and view your radiology log based on AAHA standards. You can even email or export to a .PDF file.
  • Dynamic Shot Tree to immediately add shots as you need them while you have the patient on the table and without initiating a new series
  • Customized Patient CD feature to create CDs that contain images and patient history—ideal for referring specialists and client education
  • Window and level presets to adjust an image according to your preferences and by modality (e.g., CT, MRI, US, CR, DR, XR) in their native format
  • Integrated surgical templates to streamline preoperative and trauma planning
  • DICOM® 3.0 conformance to integrate and send images from various modalities—such as CT, ultrasound or MRI—into the patient record, without having to reenter information. With DICOM® Modality Worklist, you can communicate with other DICOM-compatible systems to review and fulfill image requests using DICOM standards. Autorouting lets you configure your system to automatically send DICOM images to destinations of your choice.

Increased productivity

By streamlining the flow of diagnostic information, IDEXX-PACS software also helps your staff work more efficiently.

  • Easily exchange images with colleagues and IDEXX Telemedicine specialists or radiology consultants of your choice.
  • Integrates with Cornerstone® Practice Management System using IDEXX SmartLink® technology and other leading practice management systems using IDEXX InterLink® technology.
  • IDEXX SmartLink® technology reduces missed x-ray charges, eliminates paper forms and redundant data entry.
  • Auto-routing lets you automatically send images via DICOM® to destinations of your choice.
  • Modality awareness for CR, MRI and ultrasound simplifies saving radiographs in patients' medical records.

Software upgrades

To keep your digital imaging system's performance up-to-date, we regularly upgrade the IDEXX-PACS software. And, you'll receive those upgrades as they become available.*

An investment in medicine, revenue and client relationships

The near- and long-term financial benefits of digital radiography

Digital radiography may be more affordable than you think. And the immediate diagnostic benefits of transitioning may surprise you—including superior diagnostic detail and faster decision making. Better still: There can be a considerable tax benefit.

Digital radiography is also a significant revenue generator. Plus, quickly finding answers and starting treatment before your patient leaves your practice shows clients you care about them—and can help build long-term loyalty that in turn generates referrals.

Digital imaging could increase your revenue by 30% or more.1 The following chart illustrates increased revenue potential.

Use our Interactive Economic Model to calculate how a digital radiography system could fit into your budget. This easy-to-use tool compares the economics of digital radiography versus film. And keep in mind some other bottom-line benefits of converting to digital radiography:

  • No processor lease or purchase costs
  • The environmental benefits of chemical-free image processing
  • Recaptured square footage and costs for dark-room space and x-ray film storage

Six reasons to go green by going digital

Switching from film to an IDEXX Digital Imaging system doesn’t just save time and money. You’ll no longer need toxic processing chemicals, and that helps the environment and your practice in at least six ways:

  1. No toxic chemicals to get into the water or soil.
  2. A safer workplace for employees.
  3. No more costly regulatory fees for disposing of toxic processing chemicals.
  4. No more hazardous waste contracts, special filtering systems or septic tanks for biohazard disposal and storage.
  5. Decreased insurance liability.
  6. Positive perception among patients and the community that you run an eco-friendly veterinary practice.
The decision to buy the IDEXX Digital Imaging system was a good one indeed. In addition to the economic benefits, our practice is truly cleaner, greener and safer than before and that feels good!

Tax advantages

Per IRS tax code section 179, you can immediately deduct up to $139,000 for calendar-year 2012 expenses, as long as total purchases are below $560,000. Alternatively a temporary tax incentive has been extended that allows you to immediately deduct 50% of the cost.

As Gary I. Glassman, CPA, points out, your practice could qualify for significant tax savings (PDF) when you invest in in-house diagnostics such as an IDEXX Digital Imaging System.*

The archived Webinar Smart Practice Investments in a Tight Economy at the IDEXX Learning Center explains more about the tax advantages of investing in in-house diagnostics.
