About Calf Diarrhea

Neonatal diarrhea, or calf scours, is a major cause of mortality in calves less than one month of age. It's caused by various infectious organisms—bacteria, virus, and protozoa—but death is commonly the result of one thing: dehydration.

Colostrum is a first line of defense against bovine diarrhea, offering nursing calves protection against infectious agents such as Rota virus, Corona virus, Cryptosporidium parvum, E. coli (K99 enterotoxigenic form) and Salmonella.

Clinical symptoms are similar, regardless of the organism, so when sickness occurs effective management depends upon a combination of fecal testing to identify the causative organism and treatment that includes antibiotics to eliminate infection and fluids to combat dehydration and restore electrolytes.

IDEXX offers a suite of tools for detecting the most common causes of bovine diarrhea.
