IDEXX Learning Center A Growing Source For Professors and Students

Convenient, online learning opportunities enhance school curriculums to prepare students for positions in the veterinary health industry

WESTBROOK, Maine, May 18, 2011—The IDEXX Learning Center is experiencing increased use as a source for training and practical knowledge to help better prepare students planning to enter the field of animal health. Educators incorporate the materials to supplement curriculums, and students can choose to enhance their knowledge of everything from tick-borne diseases and feline pancreatitis to fluid therapy and best sample collection practices. Entering the field familiar with common medical conditions and the ability to operate the technologically advanced diagnostic instruments in today’s clinics gives recent graduates an advantage when applying for positions. In turn, veterinary practices appreciate new employees who already have the practical working knowledge and hands-on experience they need to help the practice sustain a high standard of care.

The IDEXX Learning Center The IDEXX Learning Center today includes over 2,500 educators and students among its 100,000 registered users. Students gain a better understanding of pet health and the diagnostic tools commonly used in today’s busy practices while they’re still in school. After graduating, they continue to take refresher courses for CE credit to stay current with developments in animal health and practice management as well as enhancements and new capabilities for in-house analyzers.

“I was introduced to the IDEXX Learning Center through our vet tech program at St. Petersburg College,” said Cecilia Nieves, now a veterinary technician at Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service in Tampa, Florida. “We were required to take the basic fecal and urinalysis courses and print the certificates as proof of completion. Our professors highly recommended the IDEXX Learning Center for continuing education, and now I routinely check for new topics as well as refreshers. The lessons are enjoyable and the completion certificates validate your time. Best of all, it’s free! I recommend it to other vet techs all the time.”

“I’ve been a veterinary technician for more than 30 years and have been teaching veterinary technicians for 28 years,” says Dennis Lively, RVT and Instructor of Veterinary Technology at National American University (NAU). “The IDEXX Learning Center is a valuable resource for both roles. I’ve used the bleeding disorders course with my coagulation lectures and The IDEXX Guide to Hematology and The IDEXX Guide to the Complete Urinalysis with my introductory clinical pathology class. Students take the Fecal Analysis Workshop for my parasitology class, and they complete the LaserCyte Certificate Course and VetTest Certificate Course as part of their final clinical lab class before graduation. I plan to use the Client-Communication Webinars in my Veterinary Office and Hospital Management class. All of the presentations are practical, informative and useful. In my teaching, I emphasize that for veterinary technicians to succeed, they have to bring value to the practice,” Dennis adds. “The courses offered by the IDEXX Learning Center help them provide that value.”

The IDEXX Learning Center offers an extensive range of diagnostic and practice management education, including on-demand courses, snippets and archived Webinars as well as scheduled Webinars, seminars, sponsored conference sessions, tutorials and a learning library. Education is offered for different levels of knowledge and experience too—from Tick-borne Diseases 101 and Unraveling the Hemogram: What Do All Those Numbers Mean?, to practical topics that help with practice management and client communication such as Exceeding Client Expectations in a Tough Economy.
