IDEXX Survey Results Shed New Light on Feline Cardiac Disease

New information and consumer Web site help veterinarians guide cat owners to management and treatment

WESTBROOK, Maine, January 17, 2011—IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. has released initial findings from a national survey that shed new light on the prevalence of feline heart disease and the profile of cats at risk. These findings have led to the development of, a consumer Web site which supports veterinarians’ efforts to educate pet owners about the frequency, symptoms and risks of feline heart disease.

Early findings from the survey IDEXX launched last spring verify prior studies that found as many as 1 in 6 cats are at risk for feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.1 To date, more than 3,500 patients have been tested as part of this survey, and more than 90% of practices reported they took action—rechecking results or recommending a referral to a cardiologist based on elevated Cardiopet proBNP results. The new site gives veterinarians another tool to help their clients better understand the emerging knowledge and medical implications of feline heart disease at a level that is appropriate for consumers.

“Based on results collected to date, we believe that veterinarians should advise cat owners to have their at-risk pets tested for cardiac conditions more regularly,” said Andrew Beardow, BVM&S, MRCVS, DACVIM (Cardiology), IDEXX Cardiologist. “Most owners don’t know that, unlike the human medical experience, heart disease in cats generally has very few symptoms and indicators. Cats hide their illness very well. The Web site is a great additional resource to help cat owners learn more about their pets and the potential for disease.”

IDEXX is still enrolling survey participants. Interested veterinarians may visit and enroll at the IDEXX booth (2207) at NAVC, January 16–19, or online at
