IDEXX Laboratories and Dechra Veterinary Products Team Up To Help Identify and Manage Feline Hyperthyroid Disease

Co-promotion makes diagnosing and treating feline hyperthyroidism more efficient and affordable

WESTBROOK, Maine, January 13, 2011—IDEXX Laboratories and Dechra Veterinary Products announce a partnership to make the diagnosis and treatment of feline hyperthyroidism more efficient and affordable for veterinarians and their clients. The promotion combines the IDEXX SNAP Total T4 and the IDEXX SNAP T4 tests’ ability to provide accurate in-house T4 results in minutes with a special offer on Dechra’s Felimazole (methimazole) coated tablets (2.5 mg). Now, rather than call pet owners back for a second appointment to discuss treatment and dispense medication, veterinarians can easily test, diagnose and begin treatment for feline patients in just one visit.

“Hyperthyroidism is one of the most commonly diagnosed feline endocrine disorders,” says Tammi Lesser, LVT, Director of Marketing, IDEXX VetLab, IDEXX Laboratories. “Our SNAP T4 point-of-care test and Dechra’s Felimazole 2.5 mg tablets give veterinarians a convenient, cost-effective way to provide pet owners with Real-Time Care; they can diagnose and start treatment of this chronic, progressive disease immediately. The ability to discuss diagnostic results and treatment plans face-to-face with clients may also help increase compliance by as much as 40%.”1

The easy-to-use IDEXX SNAP Total T4 Test and the IDEXX SNAP T4 Test are run on the SNAPshot Dx Analyzer and IDEXX SNAP Reader, respectively. The tests use ELISA technology and the analyzers employ proprietary image analysis algorithms to provide accurate, reliable results in minutes.

Now through March 31, 2011, practices that purchase any box of IDEXX SNAP T4 tests will receive two bottles of Felimazole 2.5 mg tablets at no extra cost. Felimazole tablets, the only drug treatment for feline hyperthyroidism that is FDA–approved for veterinary use, are comparable in cost to generic drugs.

“Felimazole tablets are fully supported by Dechra’s Technical Services Team. This type of support and pharmacovigilance is not available with generics,” says Dena Ware, Companion Animal Marketing Manager for Dechra. “In addition, the unique dosing size and sugar coating allow for more safety in handling (no need to split tablets) and easier administration.”
