IDEXX Laboratories Introduces the New and Improved SNAP Total T4 Test for the SNAPshot Dx Analyzer

Excellent correlation and alignment with IDEXX Reference Laboratories Total T4

WESTBROOK, Maine, January 11, 2011—IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., introduces the new and improved SNAP Total T4 Test for the IDEXX SNAPshot Dx Analyzer. Because of the collaborative approach in the research and development of this new test, the reference intervals (ranges) and interpretive information are directly aligned with the IDEXX Reference Laboratories Total T4 assay, making result interpretation of one methodology compatible with the other. Utilizing one sample volume and one single dynamic range for canine, feline and equine patients, this new assay simplifies the steps required to run the test. The SNAP Total T4 Test also offers the advantage of fast, clinically accurate results in-house during patient visits for improved delivery of patient care and increased pet-owner satisfaction. And it’s fully quantitative, so veterinarians can more quickly and easily screen, diagnose and monitor treatment of thyroid disease.

The SNAPshot Dx Analyzer uses proprietary image analysis algorithms to analyze each SNAP test and produce reliable, accurate results in minutes. The analyzer reads the assay results at the right time and, through the IDEXX VetLab Station, automatically downloads the data into the patient’s electronic medical record—all during the patient visit. Results are then incorporated into the IDEXX VetLab Station’s easy-to-read integrated diagnostic report for a more complete picture of the patient’s health. Using this report to discuss diagnostic results face-to-face with clients during their pet’s appointment helps increase understanding and compliance, which in turn helps veterinary practices provide Real-Time Care for a higher level of service and customer satisfaction.

The SNAPshot Dx Analyzer helps to standardize practice protocols, creates more efficient work flow by running multiple patient samples simultaneously and increases practice revenue by significantly reducing costly missed charges through automation. Automatically capturing patient information in the electronic medical record also drives consistency with record-keeping guidelines from the American Animal Hospital Association.

“I like the efficiency of running the SNAP Total T4 Test in-house, because I can discuss the results with clients before they leave the practice, answer their questions and prescribe medication as needed,” says Peter Kintzer, DVM, DACVIM, an IDEXX internal medicine consultant and an internist at the Boston Road Animal Clinic in Sutton, Massachusetts. “I recommend that a total T4 be used as the initial screening test for patients suspected of having hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. I would definitely include it in preanesthetic testing and annual wellness profiles on cats 7 years of age and older. A total T4 is often indicated in “ain’t doing right” dogs. It is our practice to include it in annual canine wellness profiles, particularly in breeds that are predisposed to hypothyroidism. We then interpret the results in conjunction with the patient’s clinical signs and other blood work to ensure that we arrive at a diagnosis that considers all the factors of the pet’s current condition and not solely on the basis of a low total T4 result.”

Customers in field trials have praised the intuitive work flow, ease of use, speed to results and overall performance of the new T4 test.1

The new SNAP Total T4 Test joins the SNAPshot Dx Analyzer’s growing menu of in-house diagnostics, which also includes the SNAP Cortisol Test, SNAP Bile Acids Test, SNAP cPL Test, SNAP 4Dx Test, SNAP Feline Triple Test, SNAP FIV/FeLV Combo Test and the SNAP Heartworm RT Test. The new SNAP Total T4 Test also complements IDEXX Reference Laboratories’ new Free T4 Test—a new reference laboratory test that offers precision and fast turnaround, uses no radioactive reagents, and provides veterinarians with further trusted support for their endocrine diagnostic needs.
