IDEXX Launches New Pseudalert* Test

On September 29, IDEXX Water launched the Pseudalert™ test, a 24-hour test for the detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pool/spa and bottled water. The new test uses the same platform as IDEXX Colilert® and Enterolert® products and works well with both carbonated and noncarbonated waters.

Water Testing

With its ready-to-use reagents and unit-dosed packaging, Pseudalert requires less than one minute of hands-on time, making it a welcome replacement for older, conventional test methods that are time-consuming, tedious and subjective. Pseudalert provides confirmed Pseudomonas aeruginosa results in 24 hours and can be used for presence/absence detection or with IDEXX Quanti-Tray® or Quanti-Tray®/2000 to achieve quantifiable results.

Pseudoalert

The Pseudalert Test is currently being launched worldwide in a 100-mL formulation. A 250-mL formulation will be released in the first quarter of 2011 to meet the needs of European bottlers.

Enterolert-DW* Test Launched in Europe
Water

On September 1, IDEXX Water launched the Enterolert®-DW test in Europe. Enterolert-DW is a 24-hour test for the detection of enterococci in drinking water.

In Europe, drinking water must be tested for enterococci, coliforms and Escherichia coli. Now European utilities, public health departments and private laboratories can obtain results on all three parameters within 24 hours by using Enterolert-DW and Colilert®-18. This is a huge step forward in convenience, accuracy and the time to confirmed results.

To evaluate the new test, IDEXX conducted a pan-European field trial with eight laboratories in seven countries. The laboratories tested a total of 1,161 samples and identified 811 bacterial infections. The study was instrumental in understanding how Enterolert-DW performs in the environmental laboratory.

“We observed excellent Enterolert-DW performance. Enterolert-DW can accurately detect enterococci much better than standard methods and is 99.6% sure that the positive is an Enterococcus species.” said Chun-ming Chen, Director R&D, IDEXX Water.

Colilert*-18 Approved for Fecal Coliform Testing in Wastewater
I want to save YOU time!

IDEXX Water recently performed an Alternate Test Procedure study to validate the use of Colilert®-18 with Quanti-Tray® for measuring fecal coliforms in wastewater. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) reviewed the Colilert-18/Quanti-Tray fecal coliform validation data and concluded that Colilert-18 used with Quanti-Tray met the requirements for the measurement of fecal coliforms in wastewater and will be listed for wastewater fecal coliform testing at 40 CFR Part 136.3 (Clean Water Act) program testing. Facilities may seek individual approval to use Colilert-18 with Quanti-Tray for wastewater fecal coliform testing by contacting their regional authority. The group has maintained 99.9% water-product availability for the past two years, while shipping products to over 100 countries—a real achievement!

Tech Tip
Listening to Our Customers
IDEXX Sterile Water is used by many of our customers to do quality-control testing, make sample dilutions and reconstitute SimPlate® for HPC media.
Thanks to suggestions from several of our customers, our quality-control testing of IDEXX Sterile Water (catalog # WSW-10) now includes two additional tests on each lot of IDEXX Sterile Water:
  • Bacteriological Quality of Reagent Water with a Ratio of Growth Rate
  • Use Test with Student’s Test Limits
IDEXX Sterile Water lot-specific certificates of quality have been updated with this added testing data to meet U.S. EPA, Standard Methods and NELAC requirements.
This change may eliminate the need for laboratories to perform this testing themselves. You can view the IDEXX Sterile Water lot-specific certificates of quality on the IDEXX Water Web site.
