Enterolert®: An Easy, Overnight Test for Enterococci

Enterococci are gaining importance as a fecal indicator in an increasing variety of waters. The U.S. EPA Ambient Water Rule states that enterococcus counts (along with E. coli) show a direct correlation with swimming-associated gastrointestinal illness rates, while fecal coliform counts do not.

Enterolert Family of Products
This rule specifically applies to fresh or marine surface waters used for recreation; propagation of fish, shellfish or wildlife; agriculture; industry; navigation; or as source water for drinking-water facilities. Enterolert is an approved method for analysis of enterococci under the Ambient Water Rule.

In addition, Enterolert is proposed for approval under the U.S. EPA's proposed Wastewater Rule . This rule was proposed in April 2004 and is expected to be promulgated during 2005.

Enterolert is typically run in combination with Quanti-Tray®, IDEXX's patented method for quantification of bacteria in water. Simply add Enterolert reagent to a sample, shake it and pour the mixture into the Quanti-Tray. This mixture is then sealed into the tray and incubated at 41°C for 24 hours. When run with Quanti-Tray/2000, Enterolert provides completed counts up to 2,419, minimizing the need for time-consuming dilutions. No confirmations are required.

H2O Fact

The U.S. EPA Ambient Water Rule has been in effect since August 20, 2003. This rule sets guidelines for monitoring many types of water. The rule approves test methods for E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and enterococci.

A 24-hour, completed result means laboratories receive critical public health information sooner. For example, overnight results let health officials open clean beaches one day earlier than some traditional methods, which require 48 hours. A 24-hour result also means yesterday's samples come out of the incubator when today's samples go in, minimizing confusion and saving incubator space.
