Increasingly, laboratory managers who test wastewater are moving to easy, rapid methods for wastewater compliance. This is due in part to the switch from monitoring fecal coliforms to E. coli in wastewater.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the IDEXX Colilert®-18 test as a United States (U.S.) EPA-approved method for drinking-water analysis under The Total Coliform Rule. Colilert-18 remains the fastest U.S. EPA-approved test for total coliform and E. coli analysis.

for methods that provide accurate quantitative results. A large part
of microbiology testing involves drinking-water testing in compliance
with the U.S. EPA’s Total Coliform Rule.

- U.S. EPA Proposed Wastewater Rule: The U.S. EPA
has proposed the approval of Colilert, Colilert-18 and Quanti-Tray
for the detection of E. coli in wastewater, and Enterolert
and Quanti-Tray for the detection of enterococci in wastewater.
