    The ALKP, ALT and AST tests assist you in identifying damage to the liver, and BUN and CREA screen for damage to the kidney (the organs most at risk from NSAID therapy).
  • Saves you money, because you don’t need to pull other panels apart to find the appropriate tests, leaving those panels incomplete

Five tests for monitoring patients on long-term medications

 

Liver

  • ALT (alanine aminotransferase)—ALT is a sensitive indicator of active liver-cell injury.
  • AST (asparate aminotransferase)—With a shorter half-life than ALT, AST can complement ALT in indicating “active” liver-cell injury.
  • ALKP (alkaline phosphatase)—ALKP can help detect cholestasis.

 

Kidney

  • BUN (blood urea nitrogen)—An increase in BUN can indicate a decrease in glomerular filtration rate.
  • CREA (creatinine)—An increase in creatinine can indicate a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, and may be a more specific indicator of kidney damage.

Ensure maximum accuracy—always prepare the sample properly when analyzing blood chemistry parameters. 

Running a test on the VetTest analyzer:
  1. Prepare your plasma or serum sample.
  2. Select patient information.
  3. Insert slides at prompt.
  4. Follow the "beep" prompts for pipetting.
  5. The VetTest analyzer finishes the testing process and automatically downloads results to the electronic medical record.

Preparing a plasma sample

We recommend using a lithium-heparin tube with a gel barrier. Separate plasma from red cells within five minutes when using lithium-heparin.

  1. Use the appropriate tube. Do not use EDTA.
  2. Use the appropriate sample collection device.
  3. Draw the sample gently. Transfer if necessary.* Use the correct blood-to-lithium-heparin ratio.
  4. Gently invert the sample for 30 seconds to mix.
  5. Centrifuge the samples.

    (≥ 12,000 rpm): 120 seconds

    StatSpin Centrifuge Settings:

    StatSpin MP—Hematocrit Setting

    StatSpin VT—Hard Spin

    Standard Centrifuge

    (8,000 rpm): 10 minutes

  6. Transfer the plasma sample to a sample cup.

Preparing a serum sample

  1. Use the appropriate tube.
  2. Use the appropriate sample collection device.
  3. Draw the sample gently. Transfer if necessary.*
  4. Let the sample clot for a minimum of 20 minutes.
  5. Centrifuge the samples.
