Compare the imaging technologies behind IDEXX Digital Imaging systems

How often do you take x-rays? How quickly do you need to view images? Your answers will help you determine the imaging technology that’s right for your practice.

Computed Radiography

  • Images are generated with a cassette containing a flexible screen coated with a photostimulable phosphor.
  • Lignt energy is absorbed by phosphor screen, which holds it as a latent image.
  • Cassette is placed in scanner; image is digitized and sent to computer.
  • Phosphor screen is automatically erased.

Computed radiography work flow—ideal for practices transitioning to digital from film

  1. Position the animal as needed (PDF) for capturing desired anatomy.
  2. Capture image on cassette.
  3. Remove cassette from Bucky tray/table area.
  4. Insert cassette into scanner.
  5. Image populates on monitor in under 60 seconds.

Used in the IDEXX I-Vision CR™ Digital Imaging System.

Flat-panel Detector
Direct-Capture (DR) Technology

  • Images are generated with an amorphous selenium plate that absorbs the x-ray directly.
  • Digital information is sent from plate directly to computer.

Direct-capture work flow—ideal for fast-paced small-animal and equine practices

  1. Position the animal as needed (PDF)—or in the case of equine patients, the plate—for capturing desired anatomy.
  2. Capture image using plate.
  3. Image appears on monitor:
    • In under 8 seconds on the IDEXX-DR™ 1417 Digital Imaging System
    • In under 5 seconds on the IDEXX EquiView® Digital Imaging System

Used in the IDEXX-DR 1417 and the IDEXX EquiView systems.

An investment in medicine, revenue and client relationships

The near- and long-term financial benefits of digital radiography

Digital radiography may be more affordable than you think. And the immediate diagnostic benefits of transitioning may surprise you—including superior diagnostic detail and faster decision making. Better still: There can be a considerable tax benefit.

Digital radiography is also a significant revenue generator. Plus, quickly finding answers and starting treatment before your patient leaves your practice shows clients you care about them—and can help build long-term loyalty that in turn generates referrals.

Profitable

Digital imaging could increase your revenue by 30% or more.1 The following chart illustrates increased revenue potential.

AVERAGE IMAGES PER MONTHCOST PER IMAGEINCREASE IN MONTHLY IMAGES WITH DIGITALINCREASED PRICE PER IMAGE WITH DIGITALINCREASE IN MONTHLY IMAGING REVENUE
10$605%$70$770
36$6015%$70$2870
125$6030%$70$11410

Affordable

Use our Interactive Economic Model to calculate how a digital radiography system could fit into your budget. This easy-to-use tool compares the economics of digital radiography versus film. And keep in mind some other bottom-line benefits of converting to digital radiography:

  • No processor lease or purchase costs
  • The environmental benefits of chemical-free image processing
  • Recaptured square footage and costs for dark-room space and x-ray film storage

Six reasons to go green by going digital

Switching from film to an IDEXX Digital Imaging system doesn’t just save time and money. You’ll no longer need toxic processing chemicals, and that helps the environment and your practice in at least six ways:

  1. No toxic chemicals to get into the water or soil.
  2. A safer workplace for employees.
  3. No more costly regulatory fees for disposing of toxic processing chemicals.
  4. No more hazardous waste contracts, special filtering systems or septic tanks for biohazard disposal and storage.
  5. Decreased insurance liability.
  6. Positive perception among patients and the community that you run an eco-friendly veterinary practice.

The decision to buy the IDEXX Digital Imaging system was a good one indeed. In addition to the economic benefits, our practice is truly cleaner, greener and safer than before and that feels good!

Tax advantages

The Federal government has extended key provisions of the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 into 2009. And, as Gary I. Glassman, CPA, points out, your practice could qualify for significant tax savings (PDF) when you invest in in-house diagnostics such as an IDEXX Digital Imaging System.*

Per IRS tax code section 179, you can immediately deduct up to $250,000 for calendar-year 2009 expenses, as long as total purchases are below $800,000. Alternatively a temporary tax incentive that allows you to immediately deduct 50% of the cost.

The archived Webinar Smart Practice Investments in a Tight Economy at the IDEXX Learning Center explains more about the tax advantages of investing in in-house diagnostics.
