Long ago, a wealthy feudal lord took shelter under a tree by a temple as a fierce thunderstorm raged. The lord saw the temple priest’s cat seemingly beckoning to him from a distance, so he followed with great curiosity. As soon as he left the shelter of the tree, it was struck by lightning and destroyed—the cat had saved the lord’s life!
Eternally grateful, the lord befriended the poor priest and his cat, and the temple soon became prosperous. When the charmed cat later died, the first Maneki Neko was made in his honor.
Of course, cats everywhere are a sign of good fortune.
