Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL)/Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV)

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a retrovirus that may cause lymphosarcoma in cattle. The virus resides in blood lymphocytes where circulating antibodies are unable to neutralize it. Therefore, once an animal is infected with BLV, it is infected for life.

BLV is economically significant to the producer because of premature culling or death as a result of lymphosarcoma. Another concern is the condemnation of carcasses at slaughter, which has a significant economic impact on the dairy and cattle industries. Losses from export restrictions are another economic concern of BLV infection. Countries that have bovine leukosis control programs require BLV-free certification prior to shipping cattle to their regions. Moreover, exporters of semen are under increasing pressure to ensure that their product is from a BLV-free animal in a BLV-free herd.

IDEXX Leukosis Serum X2 Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The IDEXX Leukosis Serum X2 Ab Test is an enzyme immunoassay for the detection of antibody to bovine leukemia virus (BLV) in individual serum and plasma and pools of up to 10 individual sera or plasma samples from cattle.

  • BLV antibody detection by antigens produced on new cell line
  • Very high specificity—reduces the need for verification
  • Excellent sensitivity—fulfills OIE prescriptions and EU directives
  • Detection of antibodies against viral proteins, including the highly immunogenic early-appearing glycoprotein gp51
  • Modern kit format—easy to use, with ready-for-use reagents
  • High sample throughput—automation saves time and cost
  • Easy data management—can be used with xChek® software

IDEXX Leukosis Serum Screening Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The IDEXX Leukosis Serum Screening Ab Test detects all types of antibodies against the virus (e.g., envelope proteins, capsid proteins) in individual or pool sera. The test are based on the use of an ultrapurified virus lysate and are standardized to detect the European standard serum for (E5) diluted to 1:100 in negative bovine serum, according to the requirements of the Council Directive 64/432/EEC (modified on December 11, 1984, June 26, 1991 and March 2001).

IDEXX Leukosis Milk Screening Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The IDEXX Leukosis Milk Screening Ab Test detects all types of antibodies against the bovine leukosis virus (BLV) in bovine tank milk. The test is based on the use of an ultrapurified virus lysate. It is standardized to detect the OIE standard serum E05 1/25,000 (100 milk samples in the pool) according to Council Directive 88/406/EEC and OIE description (chapter 2.4.11).

IDEXX Leukosis Blocking Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The IDEXX Leukosis Blocking Ab Test detects specific antibodies directed to the BLV gp51 antigen in both individual sera and pools of 10 sera. It is based on the competition between the BLV antibodies of the bovine serum and a peroxidase conjugate monoclonal anti-gp51 BLV antibody. It is an important complement to the indirect BLV ELISA that uses an ultrapurified BLV lysate. It is standardized to detect the European standard for serum (E5) diluted to 1:100 in negative bovine serum, according to the requirements of the Council Directive 64/432/EEC (modified on the December 11, 1984, June 26, 1991 and March 2001).

Pourquier® AGID Leukosis Ab Test

Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The Pourquier® AGID Leukosis Ab Test detects anti-gp51 antibodies and the internal protein p24 of the bovine leucosis virus by using the agar gel immunodiffusion method (AGID). This method corresponds to the method recommended by the Official Journal of the European Union (Council Directive 64/432/EEC). It makes it possible to show the presence of the European standard diluted at 1:10 in negative bovine serum.
