How to use SNAP® residue tests

 

Before you begin:
  • Work space must be clean and free of drug residues.
  • Preheat heater block to 45°C ±5°C (113°F ±9°F).
  • Place SNAP device on heater block; leave on heater block for duration of test.
  • Make sure conjugate pellet is at the bottom of the sample tube.
    If not, tap tube gently to return pellet to the bottom.
  • Agitate the milk sample thoroughly.
 
Note:
  • Accurate incubation times and temperatures are essential.
  • Do not use a SNAP test after its expiration date.
  • Refer to package insert for complete instructions.

 

 
Step 1: Prepare Sample
    

Using pipette, draw up milk to indicator line (450 μL ±50 μL).* Add milk to sample tube.

 

Gently shake tube side-to-side
3–4 times to dissolve reagent pellet.

 

Place tube on heater block and incubate:

Beta-Lactam Tetracycline Aflatoxin M15 minutes
Gentamicin Sulfamethazine2 minutes

 

 
Step 2: Run Test
    

Pour entire contents of sample tube into sample well of SNAP® device.

 

As the edge of the activation circle begins to disappear, press down firmly until you hear a distinct “snap.” If activation takes more than 60 seconds, result may be inaccurate.

 

Place tube on heater block and incubate:

Step 3: Read Results
    

Read results within 30 seconds after incubation, either visually or using the SNAPshot® DSR Reader.

 

Negative
Sample spot is darker than or

How should I store my SNAP tests?

Refrigerate all SNAP materials at 0°–7°C (32°–45° F). Tests can be kept at room temperature, 18°–29°C (64°–84°F), during the day of use. Remove only the number of tests to be used for the day.

 

How long does the SNAP test take?

The SNAP rapid screening method produces results in less than ten minutes.

 

What is the proper heater block temperature?

The SNAP test kits must be run at 45°C ±5°C (104°–122°F). The SNAP Portable Heater Blocks have internal thermostats optimized within the range of 40°–50°C. Allow 10–15 minutes for the portable heater to reach operating temperature. If you do not see any color in the temperature strip, do not attempt to run the test. How critical is the activation time of the SNAP test?

Activation time is very critical. After the initial five-minute incubation, pour the entire contents of the sample tube into the sample well of the SNAP device. Remain with the device and watch the sample flow across the results window toward the blue activation circle. When the blue activation circle BEGINS to disappear, press the activator firmly until the device "snaps" and the activator is flush with the body of the SNAP device. (When the edge of the circle nearest the sample begins to turn from dark blue to white, activation should occur. Do not let the circle completely disappear.)

Does the SNAP device need to remain on the heater block throughout the entire test?

Yes, the SNAP device must remain on the heater block at 45°C ±5°C for the duration of the test—during the five-minute incubation time, the activation time and the four-minute color development time.

 

Can I test more than one sample at a time?

The number of SNAP tests you can run at one time depends on the type of heater block you have. IDEXX offers several models that allow a minimum of two SNAP devices and a maximum of eight SNAP devices per heater. With the preset portable models (115/12V AC/DC), you can accommodate two SNAP devices at a time.

If you're running multiple samples, set up all samples and SNAP devices on the heater, then set a timer for five minutes. After the five-minute incubation, individually pour the samples onto the sample well of each device. Watch the devices carefully as each sample may flow at a different rate. Activate each device as the individual activation circles begin to disappear. Snap the devices completely and set a timer for the four-minute color development time after the last device has been activated. After four minutes, you can read the results.

 

Do SNAP tests need to be brought to room temperature before testing?

No, you do not need to warm the kits prior to use; you can run the SNAP tests directly out of the refrigerator. Do not open the foil pouch until you're ready to run the test.

Before you test:

  1. Verify that the SNAP device has prespots in the results window and activation circle.
  2. Make sure the pellet is moving freely in the bottom of the sample tube.
  3. Be sure the heater block has been preheated to a temperature within the 45°C ±5°C range.

Depending on the day of the week you order, most orders from customers in the U.S. will be delivered no later than five business days after they are placed.
