IDEXX Laboratories Launches New SNAP® Giardia Test

Introducing an accurate and rapid in-house screen for use with dogs and cats

WESTBROOK, Maine, February 26, 2004—IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDXX), today announced the introduction of a new SNAP® ELISA test to screen dogs and cats for Giardia infection. This new test, the first pet-side test to identify soluble Giardia antigen, provides veterinarians with an accurate diagnosis in just eight minutes.

"Studies have shown that Giardia is highly prevalent in dogs and cats, therefore it is in the best interest of the patient and client to quickly identify and treat infection," said Dr. Leif Lorentzen of IDEXX. "Until now, a fecal float evaluation or a fecal smear provided the only options for screening Giardia in-house, and their accuracy is very low. Typically, a fecal float identifies only half of infected dogs and falsely diagnoses up to 25% of uninfected patients. The new USDA-approved SNAP® Giardia Test is proven to deliver 95% sensitivity/99.3% specificity compared to IFA, and 96.2% sensitivity/100% specificity compared to reference laboratory ELISA tests."

The IDEXX SNAP® Giardia Test uses gold-standard ELISA technology, trusted by thousands of veterinarians for accuracy and ease-of-use. This test procedure includes a unique conjugate fecal swab that allows for much easier, "hands-off" sampling.
