M. pt.
Mycobacterium paratuberculosis
Johne's disease is a chronic, debilitating enteritis of cattle and other ruminants caused by the organism Mycobacterium paratuberculosis (M. pt.). Every year, Johne’s disease costs the dairy and livestock industries millions of dollars. Animals
may carry the disease for months or years without showing clinical signs. This slow progression of the disease may reduce milk production and compromise the health of other animals in the herd, which may lead to further financial loss. Implementing a
testing and management program may have significant cost savings when compared with the potential revenue lost if an infected herd is not effectively managed.
