What does DICOM mean to my practice?
DICOM facilitates communication and transfer of images and data between devices made by different equipment manufacturers, or more simply put, it prevents vendor “lockout.” It provides a standard means to distribute information between imaging work stations and modalities, storage devices and print mechanisms, regardless of the manufacturer.
Do I need DICOM?
By using DICOM standards, you are ensuring that your practice can communicate digital diagnostic information from multiple modalities from work station to work station. Also, DICOM allows you to communicate standard information with colleagues and consultants outside of your clinic, regardless of vendor preference.
