The Wound Healing Process
Most wounds heal without undue complications. However, we have all
faced the dilemma of the chronic, non-healing wound. It is a
frustrating situation for the veterinarian and pet owner alike.
Wound healing follows a predictable pattern. Any disruption in this
pattern can lead to a non-healing wound. Normal healing can be delayed
by the following conditions:
- Age
- Diabetes
- Chronic illness
- Steroid therapy
- Cancer
- Acral lick dermatitis (dogs)
- Chemotherapy
- Large wounds
- Obesity
- Pressure sores from paralysis
- Poor nutrition
- Wound infection
