Pet Food Recall
IDEXX Responds to Questions About Diagnostic Testing
Letter to Veterinary Customers, March 23, 2007

In response to questions from veterinarians, IDEXX is offering testing options to help you screen healthy pets for any evidence of renal damage and help diagnose ill pets with renal disease that have or are suspected of ingesting one of the recalled foods.

As you know, there is a massive pet food recall underway of pet foods produced by Menu Foods. The food has been sold under 53 brands of dog food and 47 brands of cat food. The recall includes a wide variety of the company’s cuts and gravy style foods sold in foil pouches and cans. The recall has been linked to contaminated sources of wheat gluten. Other foods, including one dry food and several pet treat products produced by other manufacturers, have also been recalled.

For a complete list of recalled foods, visit www.avma.org/aa/menufoodsrecall/products.asp.

Acute renal disease has been identified in affected dogs and certain cats that have ingested tainted foods. Reports include animals presenting acutely with vomiting, anorexia, lethargy and weakness—some with oral ulcerations and typically polyuria abd polydipsia (PU/PD). These animals can be severely azotemic. Other milder cases are being reported as well with more protracted history of onset of illness. Azotemia, hyperphosphatemia and isosthenuria are the most common laboratory findings.

Treatment is supportive fluid therapy and other standard supportive management for renal failure. With treatment, many of these animals survive even when initially severely azotemic. IDEXX offers these diagnostic options:
