Liver

ALT (alanine aminotransferase): ALT is a sensitive indicator of active liver-cell injury.

AST (asparate aminotransferase): With a shorter half-life than ALT, AST can complement ALT in indicating "active" liver-cell injury.

ALKP (alkaline phosphatase): ALKP can help detect cholestasis.

Kidney

BUN (blood urea nitrogen): An increase in BUN can indicate a decrease in glomerular filtration rate.

CREA (creatinine): An increase in creatinine can indicate a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, and may be a more specific indicator of kidney damage.

Why should you use the NSAID Monitoring Panel?

NSAID packagingManufacturers recommend that all patients on NSAID therapy be tested:

  • Prior to initiating NSAID therapy—for a baseline, including a general health profile, complete blood count, electrolytes and a urinalysis

  • During the trial period—using the NSAID Monitoring Panel

  • Periodically throughout NSAID therapy—monitoring regularly using the NSAID Monitoring Panel
