New Canine SNAP® 4Dx® Diagnostic Test Available [Trade]
IDEXX introduces the only in-house test that allows veterinarians to simultaneously screen canine patients for heartworm and three tick-borne diseases

Westbrook, Maine, January 19, 2007—IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDXX), announces the availability of the new SNAP® 4Dx® test kit, an in-clinic diagnostic test that simultaneously screens dogs for four vector-borne diseases—heartworm disease, canine ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis), Lyme disease and canine anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum, formerly Ehrlichia equi)—in approximately eight minutes. The SNAP 4Dx test is the only point-of-care test for canine anaplasmosis, an emerging health threat, Lyme borreliosis and canine ehrlichiosis.

IDEXX SNAP 4Dx Diagnostic TestBy combining Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis with heartworm screening, SNAP 4Dx allows veterinarians to efficiently and economically screen for four diseases that are difficult to diagnose on the basis of clinical signs alone. Because the most common signs of anaplasmosis are often hidden, SNAP 4Dx is recommended for the annual screening of all dogs. The test can detect antibodies as early as eight days after the animal is infected, enabling veterinarians to treat many patients before they even get sick.

Affordable and precise, the 4Dx test delivers results with at least 98% specificity on all four diseases. “This is the only in-house test that lets veterinarians screen for heartworm and three tick-borne diseases at once, including anaplasmosis,” said Canine Rapid Assay Marketing Director Mike Sullivan. “That’s important because Lyme disease and anaplasmosis are spreading, and many dogs have both at the same time.” According to the National Center for Infectious Diseases, anaplasmosis can be transmitted not only to dogs, cats, and horses but to humans as well.

Reports of heartworm, Lyme and other tick-borne diseases are increasing in number and range. Once limited to the Mississippi River Valley and southeastern United States, heartworm infection has been found in dogs native to all 50 states. Lyme disease cases, once predominantly found in the northeastern United States, are now reported across the country. Additionally, veterinarians are now finding Lyme borreliosis and anaplasmosis co-infection, which increases the risk of disease.

IDEXX is the leader in the market for in-clinic heartworm diagnostics and is the only company that provides combination tests, such as the SNAP 4Dx test, that test simultaneously for heartworm and other health conditions at the pet-side. The SNAP 4Dx test represents another step forward in the detection of vector-borne diseases that can help veterinarians provide the best available health care for their canine patients.
